Dags för årets Global Festival!

Om festivalen

Mellan den 19-23 augusti bjuds på en rad olika seminarier om globala frågor. Bland annat om folkrätten och Gaza, om nedgången för arbetares rättigheter, motståndet mot diktaturen i Belarus och vad händer nu i Sydafrika efter valet?

Festivalen arrangeras av Global Bar Magazine, i samarbete med Palmecentret, Läkare utan gränser, Läkarmissionen, Uppsala Health Summit och Studio SN7.

Palmecentrets kommande generalsekreterare Oscar Ernerot, vår sydafrikanska samarbetspartner Labour Research Service samt den israeliska journalisten Gideon Levy medverkar i samtal under festivalen. Gideon fick Palmepriset 2015 och har bevakat den israeliska ockupationen av Palestina i nästan 35 år.

Vad händer nu med Gaza? (20/8, 18:00)

Enligt beräkningar som publicerats i den medicinska tidskriften The Lancet kan så många som 186 000 människor ha dödats i Gaza. Samtidigt fortsätter kriget – och det oerhörda civila lidandet. Hur är det att arbeta med den humanitära hjälpen på plats? Finns det någon lösning på lång sikt – och hur såg vardagen ut i Gaza innan allt raserades?

Fia Iveslätt, sjuksköterska på MSF som arbetat på plats.
Lotta Schüllerkvist, journalist och författare till boken ”Marnas hemlighet” som första gången kom ut 2010 och som nu släpps i nyutgåva.
Göran Paulsson, tidigare biståndsråd, fram till våren 2024 chef för det svenska biståndet till Palestina.
Gideon Levy, israelisk författare och journalist för den vänster-liberala tidningen Haaretz (inleder seminariet, deltar digitalt).

Why are companies so afraid of workers? (21/8, 18:00)

Olof Palmes Internationella Center operates in five of the world‘s ten worst countries for workers, according to the Global Rights Index. In 2023, workers were subjected to violence in 44 countries. Employers threaten, initimate, and harass workers to prevent them from excercising their right to collective bargaining.

During this event, we will explore and discuss why trade union rights are being undermined, by whom, and who our opponents are. We will also highlight how trade union rights are linked to other progressive goals such as democracy, feminism and climate change.

• Trenton Elsley, Executive Director, Labour Research Service (LRS) in South Africa.
• Britta Lejon, president of the Swedish labour union ST and president of the global union PSI.

Can the new government solve South Africa’s problems? (22/8, 8:30)

For the first time since the end of the apartheid regime, the African National Congress (ANC) cannot govern by itself. Instead, ANC has formed a broad centre-left coalition government that includes the Democratic Alliance (DA). Will the new coalition succeed in turning the tide and revitalizing the economy? How will the opposition to the left of the ANC act?

• Kaj Persson, former diplomat at the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs with 40 years of experience in Southern Africa.
